I've thought about the same sort of thing for the third-person parts of Die Hard Trilogy, just aiming horizontally with mouse to give a bit more precision. I do think they could be made to have some sort of mouse input even if it's only the x-axis. I'd consider them less as third-person shooters and more just third-person action games.
